Abstract

Myristica fragrans Houtt. (seed & aril) is a prominent spice valued not only for its culinary applications but also for diverse pharmacological properties, including anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial activities. This study aims to investigate the phytochemical profile and GC-MS profile of nutmeg and mace samples collected from Ranni, Pathanamthitta district, Kerala, India. Methanolic and aqueous extracts of seed and aril were subjected to qualitative phytochemical screening which revealed the presence of flavonoids, alkaloids, saponins terpenoids, and phenolic compounds. GC-MS analysis of methanolic extracts identified various volatile bioactive compounds including, monoterpenes, esters, and aromatic compounds, with notable constituents like Myristicin, elemicin, and α-pinene, safrole. These findings validate traditional claims and highlight M. fragrans as a promising for natural drug to fight various diseases and for developing new drugs from lead compounds of this plant.
